TWO DAYS after the Lupo-Placido shooting, the police still seemed unable to pick up the killer’s trail. In an article published in the Tuesday (June 28) issue of The New York Times, Deputy Inspector Dowd, and a key assistant, Sergeant Conlon, both admitted what Sergeant Coffey had feared all along. If the police were to catch the Son of Sam, he would have to keep up his pattern of attacks. “We don’t like it, but we’re stuck with the situation. Whenever he makes that one mistake, we’ll be on him,” said Sergeant Conlon. The statement did little to calm the fears of the populace.

The article, headlined T.V. FINDS NO KOJAK OR COLUMBO AT 109TH PCT. and written by Francis X. Clines, went on to say that the police were merely able to eliminate some suspects after the Placido-Lupo attack. However, the detectives had not been able to come to grips with the more important issue, the killer’s identity.

Both Dowd and Conlon also granted a series of television interviews, stating that the killer’s capture was still a long way off—“unless,” Dowd said, “he makes a mistake.”

“Will he make a mistake?” asked an anxious television reporter.
